This garden is a gently sloping site facing south. It had been cleared with a bulldozer by over zealous builders when I first saw it.
Fortunately a mature Holly,a lovely gnarled old apple tree and a magnificent Catalpha bignonoides had been left in the garden and these survivors greatly influenced the scheme.
I designed the terrace so that the dining table was placed under the canopy of the Apple tree and to one side of the garden. This left an uninterrupted view from the new full height glass kitchen doors.
The terrace opens onto a broad, almost circular lawn, surrounded by beds of perennials and flowering shrubs. A stone path bisects the lawn and leads to a timber pavilion that is neatly roofed with cedar shingles. This seating area forms a focal point and gives a peaceful place to sit away from the house. From here you can look back up the garden through luxuriant planting, mounds of green and silver, spires of pale perennials and the dipping branches of the stately Indian bean tree.
The clients have been very involved in the planting design and since its creation, the garden has been added to by exciting shopping trips to local nurseries.
The garden reflects the enthusiasms of the clients, their generosity as hosts and their zest for life.
